MakeUp and Self-Esteem

Looking your best and feeling your best can boost your self-esteem. Feeling good about yourself is important because it affects how you communicate with people around you. Wearing makeup has become a daily ritual for women of all ages.

Here is a piece from an article from the National Counselling Society:
“A spokesperson for the chain, Sara Wolverson, said in the Daily Express: "For many women, putting their make-up is an important part of their day, and the thought of people seeing them without can be horrifying. We know that when it comes to cutting back, cosmetics are seen as an essential."
Women are relying on makeup to solve the problems regarding their self-esteem.  However, there are some women that were makeup to cover-up blemishes.

According to the National Counselling Society, “A highly effective way for women to improve their perception of themselves and build much-needed self-esteem is to attend counselling.  By talking their issues through with a trained counsellor, women can identify the underlying issues contributing to their low self-confidence and find a more effective way to work through them, other than piling on the foundation”.
The media has made women think that they should always wear makeup.  Now, it has come to the point that women are developing are low-esteem because of makeup.  A lot of people can be judgmental when it comes to the appearance of what a woman is wearing.

Life coach Jackie Fletcher gives her expert opinion: "Make-up can help with a sense of self-respect."
"The reality is that we do judge people by how they look, and this can be especially important for women in business who often need to appear professional. But if the reason for wearing make-up lies in the woman feeling worried that people will judge her for the way she looks rather than who she is, that's a problem that needs to be addressed." (Also from the article from the National Counselling Society)

Society has given women the notion that wearing make will cure all their problems and mental issues that their holding on it. From magazines to television realty shows; the media displays a wide variety of makeup advertisements targeting women with low esteem. Many women are now leaded to think that wearing makeup can change how they’re feeling on the outside.

Makeup in the Workplace

Putting your best foot forward is the best thing to do each and every day.  But does your appearance effect how you will perform on a job?  For the most part it can.  Does the amount of makeup you wear effect your workplace? A lot of students have jobs in the retail industry that sometimes allow them to wear uniforms or basic everyday apparel including makeup.  The media has made it seem that you must look your best at all times no matter what you doing!   However, some jobs require employees to wear makeup.

Here is a piece of an article written by Allure magazine about makeup and the work place:
"That's just what happened to 24-year-old Brit Melanie Stark who, as The Guardian reported, says she was forced to quit her job at Harrods in London over her refusal to wear makeup. Stark, you see, preferred to go au natural on her face, instead of adhering to the retailer's dress code, which called for: "Full makeup at all time: base, blusher, full eyes (not too heavy), lipstick, lip liner and gloss are worn at all time and maintained discreetly (please take into account the store display lighting which has a 'washing out' effect)." After working for the store for five years (and during that time, being sent home twice and banished to a stock room another time for the no-makeup thing, she says), Stark quit last week rather than comply with the code".

Many celebrities have been seen without makeup.  The Today Show hosts Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb created a segment without wearing any makeup.  In today’s society, celebrities are always wearing makeup to keep with a certain image and fan base.  But for the everyday women it’s the same case. Women are balancing many different things such as: Working, taking care of children, and their household.  Now makeup has been added to their do list in order to keep a job.
On the other hand, wearing makeup cannot make or break you when it comes to getting a job. But it doesn’t determine whether you receive the job or not.
Here is a piece of article written by Magic Valley.Com about makeup and workplace interactions:

http://sarahonthego.com/2013/04/17/celebswithoutmakeup_justbecause/
“Jessica Richmond, an employment recruiter for Intelligent Employment Solutions in Twin Falls, says she has seen poorly applied makeup damage the outcome of a job interview. Of course, no matter how good a job applicant looks, an interview can still be upended by the sounds that come out of a well-cared-for face. Makeup may help give off a first impression, but the majority of the success of an interview rests on the applicants, Richmond said”.
The media is always finding ways for women to wear makeup. No matter where you go or what you do the media is going to be a part of it. Is the workplace is becoming a place of beauty and fashion?

Little children and makeup don’t mix! Should little girls be allowed to wear makeup? Allowing little girls to wear makeup has been seen in the media because of television like Toddlers and Tiara’s. This show is about little girls who complete in various pageant and competitions. The parents of these little girls spend thousands of dollars on makeup, hair, clothes, fake teeth, and the list goes on!

Is it okay for young girls to wear makeup? Little girls shouldn’t be wearing makeup because it makes them look older than their age.   The little girls that are on the show don’t act their age, if you really think about; these little girls are acting too grow up for their age. When a women wears make up, it’s a way for her express self. Little girls that are wearing makeup are being forced to.  However, some little girls wear stage makeup when they’re performing. There is nothing wrong with in this. Many parents believe that is fine to do so don’t think it’s a good idea.

Furthermore, parents have the power to control what their children wear on their faces. Putting a little bit on lip gloss isn’t such bad thing. But when it gets to the point and young girls are wearing a full face of makeup.   The point of matter is that our little girls are wearing makeup way too early in life. If this keeps up, little girls will think that’s it okay for them to do whatever they want because allowed them to do it as little girls.
